A Technical Field Trip to the Kale Seramik Çanakkale Kalebodur Ceramic Industry Plant
Kale Seramik, which has pioneered the establishment and development of the ceramic industry in Türkiye, commenced its operations in 1957 in the district of Çan under the name Çanakkale Seramik Fabrikaları, becoming the first ceramic factory in the country. Kalebodur Seramik Sanayi, the first floor tile manufacturer in Türkiye, was founded in 1972. In 2000, Çanakkale Seramik Fabrikaları A.Ş. and Kalebodur Seramik Sanayi A.Ş. merged under a single corporate structure and have since continued their operations as Kale Seramik Çanakkale Kalebodur Seramik Sanayi A.Ş. Currently, Kaleseramik maintains production activities across four locations: Çan and Semedeli in Çanakkale, Yerköy in Yozgat, and Bandırma in Balıkesir. With an annual production capacity of 56 million square meters, the company ranks as the largest ceramic coating materials producer in Türkiye, the fourth largest in Europe, and the twenty-first largest in the world (https://www.kale.com.tr/hakkimizda).
On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, a technical field trip was organized to the company’s factory in Çan under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Okan Yaşar, with the participation of first- and second-year students from the Department of Geography Education. The visit began with an occupational health and safety briefing, followed by a workshop session. During the workshop, students expressed their creativity by painting ceramics. Subsequently, they were taken to the company’s R&D center, where engineers provided detailed information about ongoing research and development activities. The visit continued with a guided tour of a production line, where the transformation process of wall ceramics from raw materials to finished products was demonstrated step by step on-site. The technical trip concluded with a showroom visit and lunch. Following the departure from the factory, students were informed about the role of this industrial establishment within the “stone- and soil-based industries” sector in Türkiye, as well as its contribution to the transformation of Çan from a village into a small-scale urban center.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the factory authorities for facilitating this technical visit, to our Rector for providing transportation support, and to Mr. Hasan Öztürk for his guidance and informative contributions throughout the visit.
